As I get a little older, taking care of my skin has become a much higher priority. One of my favorite forms of self care is putting a face mask on. Depending on the result I’m looking for helps determine the type of face mask I use. When I received my Simply Earth Recipe Box for this month, I was excited to see some French Green Clay and a recipe for a Clay and Rose Face Mask included.

In my Simply Earth Recipe Box, I received a total of four essential oils: Fir Needle, Frankincense, Coffee and Veins (a blend of Cypress, Juniper Berry and Lemon). I also found a small pouch of French Green Clay and Rose Hydrosol, along with 6 recipes all geared towards skin care. Out of all the recipes included, I was most interested in the face mask so that is what I decided to try and share about.

I’ve used mineral masks before but never one with French Green Clay in it. I was curious about the benefits of French Green Clay and did a little research about it.

Did you know that French Green Clay….?

  • Cleans Pores: The clay helps detox your skin by bonding to impurities, making them easy to rinse off your face.
  • Is An Exfoliant: The slightly rough texture of green clay is gentle on your skin and sloughs off dead skin cells leaving smooth skin.
  • Provides Firmer Skin: The clay has skin tightening effect that tones, reduces pore size and firms skin.

To make the Clay and Rose Face Mask, I used 2 tsp of Rose Hydrosol and 1 tsp of French Green Clay. Being the newbie essential oils user I am, I’d never heard of Rose Hydrosol but found this information on the back of the bottle:

Rose Hydrosol is a natural by-product in the creation of Rose Essential Oil. It carries the same benefits as the oil, but in a much gentler form. Use it to replace water in DIY cosmetic recipes or by itself as a toner. Great for all skin types.

I love that the Rose Hydrosol also has toning properties and mixed with the French Green Clay, it has double the benefits! Plus, the smell of the Rose Hydrosol is very subtle, so if you are not a big fan of the way roses smell, I don’t think you’ll be offput by it. (The amount used in the mask was not very much and I barely noticed it.) On the flip side, if you do like the smell of roses, you will definitely appreciate the light fragrance.

Mixing up the face mask was easy, as it only required the French Green Clay and Rose Hydrosol. After combining it in a small glass bowl with a spoon, I went into the bathroom to apply it to my face. It is on the thinner side so I just used my pointer finger to put it on, adding more if it looked too thin. You don’t need to cake it on in order to reap the benefits! It starts drying fairly quickly and within 10 minutes it was dry. I could feel my face tightening as it dried. To remove the mask, I used a soft washcloth and warm water. The mask came off easily and my skin felt cleaner, smoother and tighter.
