Last summer, my family and I did an ice cream bracket and it was more fun than I expected! I mean, it’s hard not to have fun when you’re eating ice cream. But there’s something about not quite knowing how the voting is going to go that takes a simple activity to the next level.
I created a bracket that lasted 8 weeks, which for many people is how long summer break is. I have a friend who told me she and her family once did this bracket all in one night, which is another way to do it. But this would also make a fun activity to do any time of year! And the best part is that all ages can participate. The hardest part is saving the winning ice cream for the next round (because you just might want to keep eating it).

How to Organize Your Ice Cream Bracket Challenge
To prepare, I bought all the ice cream flavors for the bracket as pints. One reason for this is that they took up less space in the freezer. It also created a bit of a scarcity mentality because everyone could see there wasn’t a ton to begin with.
Next, I filled in the ice cream bracket with the flavors. I chose to be a little strategic with it by pitting chocolate and fruity against each other to start with. But you could also ask someone to put them in a random order and then fill in the flavors.
Last, eat the ice cream flavors listed in each bracket and fill in the winning flavor. At the end of your ice cream match up, you’ll have the ice cream champion! *wink*

Tips for Your Ice Cream Bracket Challenge
Stay with the same brand and ice cream type. When I bought the ice cream for our ice cream bracket, I chose flavors that were all the same brand. I also made sure they were all ice cream and not custard or sherbet. Doing it this way created a more even competition.
Avoid choosing limited edition flavors. The reason for this is because if you run out of that flavor and need to buy more, you may not be able to. If this does happen, you can just choose the next closest option.
Remember allergies. Having everyone in our family be able to participate is important to me. My husband has a nut allergy, so we made sure not to choose flavors that he couldn’t try. If you are doing this with family or friends, double check on any allergies ahead of time.
Buy pint size. As mentioned above, we chose smaller cartons of ice cream to make them easier to store. It also served as a reminder to everyone that there was a limited amount of ice cream for the challenge.
Make sure everyone is on the same page. The point of the ice cream challenge is, of course, to have fun. Be clear about the ice cream by reminding everyone that those cartons are for the challenge and not for a late night treat. It would be a bummer to pull out ice cream for the next bracket, only to find that it’s been eaten.
Enjoy! Whether you set up the ice cream challenge as a weeks long event or a one night only, it’s nearly impossible not to enjoy it. Food brings people together, even during silly (but delicious) challenges like this ice cream bracket.
