Unicorns are all the rage right now so it only made sense that my daughter would want to have a unicorn-themed birthday party this year.  I love having themes for parties because it makes figuring out all the details so much simpler, from the food to the decor to the games.

Food

One of my daughter’s favorite foods right now is pizza so I bought a Boboli pizza kit from Costco.  It came with eight mini crusts and sauce, so all I needed to get was pepperoni and cheese for the toppings.  I had the oven ready to go so that we could get four pizzas in at a time.  To help me know which pizza belonged to which girl, I cut small pieces of parchment paper, wrote their name on it and stuck the edge under their pizza.  When it cooked, I could still see the name and give the girls their pizza.  We also had a ton of fruit and veggies for the girls to snack on while their pizza was cooking.

We had cake and rainbow sherbet for dessert.  For the cake, I used a simple white cake mix which I divided into three bowls and colored the batter purple, blue and pink.  I put spoonfuls of batter into two 9″round pans and then swirled them around a bit.  The frosting was just a simple white buttercream.  The decorations were definitely the best part though!  The sprinkles were a unicorn mix from Sprinkle Pop, complete with little rice paper unicorn cutouts.  The top was decorated with a unicorn horn, ears, flowers and eyelashes that I found all together online.  I thought about making it myself but I was running short on time and this one was so cute!

Another fun treat you could make are these galaxy bars (which I’m considering renaming “unicorn bars” because that’s exactly what they remind everyone of when they see them).

Decorations

Speaking of decorations, I kept it pretty simple.  I bought a unicorn backdrop kit online.  I had to construct the flowers but everything I needed came in the kit.  Plus, we are using it as a wall decoration in my daughter’s room now so I’m able to get even more use out of it!  If I’d had a little more time, there are a few more items I would have bought to tie it all together, such as these cute straws, tassel garlands and glittery unicorn cutouts to hang from the ceiling.

Activities

After dinner, we had a dance party complete with a disco ball.  We bought my daughter this mini disco ball for Christmas and she loves it!  It has a remote that changes the settings for different patterns and colors of lights.  We just turned on a Pandora station, turned off the lights and the girls had a blast!  In between each activity, the girls kept wanting to have mini dance parties.  We switched it up a little and did some freeze dance and they giggled through it all.

Something else my daughter loves is books and she asked me to read a new one we just got called Unicorn Jazz.  It’s a really cute story about a unicorn who moves to a new place (the zoo) with her family, but she’s having a hard time fitting in because she’s different.  The story is a celebration of the things that make each of us different and how we can still be friends.

Craft

As with all the parties I’ve done for my kids in past years, we had a small craft that they were able to make and take home.  For our unicorn party, we made these darling little rainbow hand kites from Mouse Loves Pig.  They have a wooden ring that you tie colorful ribbon onto and then dance around.  Of course, when we finished, the girls wanted another dance party and I was happy to oblige.  When each of the girls first arrived to the party, they were given a unicorn headband.  Some of the girls stuck the wooden ring over the top of the horn like rainbow hair and others just twirled around letting the ribbon stream behind and around them.

And there you have it.  A simple unicorn themed birthday dance party.  We hosted five of my daughter’s friends for a late night birthday party.  Apparently I’d forgotten what it was like to be seven and hanging out with all my friends because I thought that six little girls wouldn’t make too much noise.  Well, the joke was on me because they were so loud!  But more than once I heard one of them exclaim, “This is the best party ever!” so I’ll take it (screams and all).

To make it easier to see exactly which supplies I used for my daughter’s birthday, I’ve included a list below that you can refer to.  I was really happy with everything I bought and would definitely recommend these items if you are looking to thrown your own unicorn birthday party.

What is your favorite part of this cute unicorn party?

  1. This was such a cute party! One of my twins loves unicorns, so I’ll have to keep these ideas in mind for their next birthday.

  2. That unicorn cake is so pretty! Also I love that the decorations don’t look as if they’d take you 10 days to do them. Also, the ribbon rings are so simple yet fun! Great party.

  3. SO cute Shani! Love the rainbow hand kites. They’d be fun just for a craft on a rainy day at home (and would use up some of my ribbon stash, haha). Hope you are doing well 🙂
