The Trees of Mystery in Klamath, California are definitely worth the stop! You will get to explore the beautiful redwood trees from above and below via the Canopy Trail, SkyTrail and the many walking trails.

When our family visited the California Redwoods in 2022, we knew we wanted to see as much of these amazing trees as possible. Our first stop was the Chandelier Drive Thru Tree in Leggett, then we went to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The Trees of Mystery was our last stop before heading up into Oregon and we are so glad we included it as part of our itinerary!

I’ve formatted this post into two sections: helpful information about Trees of Mystery, such as tickets, parking and restrooms; and then FAQs that will be useful as you plan your own visit.

Tickets

Everything is included with admission so there are no surprises! The following attractions are included: SkyTrail (enclosed tram), Forest Experience Trail, Wilderness Trail, Trail of Tall Tails, Kingdom of Trees, Redwood Canopy Trail and The End of the Trail Museum.

Address and Hours

The address to Trees of Mystery is 15500 US-101, Klamath, CA, 95548. It is located 6 miles from the town of Klamath, CA, and 24 miles from Crescent City, CA.

The Trees of Mystery is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and 1/2 day on Christmas Eve. There are different closing times for different parts of the attraction. Below you will find the information that I pulled from their site at the time of publishing this post. Of course, you should double check their official website for any changes due to weather or other events.

Parking

Parking at Trees of Mystery is FREE. They have a large parking lot that is adjacent to the Forest Cafe, gift shop, museum and ticket counter.

Stroller Friendly

No, I wouldn’t try to bring a stroller unless you only plan on using it in the museum, gift shop and food area. The trails are well maintained, but they are not paved.

Wheelchair Friendly

No, the trails are not accessible to wheelchairs. There is a shuttle available to SkyTrail (enclosed tram).

Pet Friendly

Yes, the Trees of Mystery allows pets in all areas except on the Redwood Canopy Trail. Remember to bring a leash and bags to pick up any “presents” they might leave.

Bathrooms

Yes, there are well maintained bathrooms next to the Forest Cafe and picnic table area. There are also bathrooms near the Interpretive Center.

FAQs about Trees of Mystery

Can I buy food at Trees of Mystery?

Yes, you can visit the Forest Cafe during the busy season. There are picnic tables nearby. We brought our own food and ate before exploring.

How tall do my kids need to be to do the Redwood Canopy Trail?

The minimum height is 36 inches. My 10, 8 and 4 year old came with me while my husband and 21 month old stayed below.

Are there other requirements to know about before going on the Redwood Canopy Trail?

Yes. It’s important to understand that the Redwood Canopy Trail is made up of 10 platforms and are connected by 8 suspension bridges with a spiral staircase at the beginning and end of the trail. You cannot exit the attraction at any point besides the start and end.

Knowing this, here are a few of the rules and requirements you should know about. (A full list is available on the Trees of Mystery website.)

• You cannot carry children. This is a safety issue. So even if they are tall enough to go on the canopy trail, if they can’t walk along the bridges and platforms, then they shouldn’t go.
• No running, jumping, bouncing or swaying on the bridges.
• Keep all loose items secure, such as phones, keys, etc.
• Be aware that the various platforms and bridges are 50-100 feet in the air. If you are afraid of heights and not sure you can walk along the canopy trail without assistance or needing to get down part way through, then don’t go.
• No pets.
• No food or drinks.

How long does it take to walk through the Trees of Mystery?

The official website says that visitors should plan to spend at least half a day. When our family went, we stayed for 2.5-3 hours. At the time of our visit, our kids were 10, 8, 4 and 21 months and they did a lot of running and exploring, but not necessarily a lot of reading the signs. There were also a few parts of the experience that we missed due to time constraints. (We were on our way up to the Oregon Coast and not staying close by.)

Is Trees of Mystery part of Redwood National Park?

No, but they are located in the Redwood forests of California. We stopped by on our way up from Arcata, CA, and the Prairie Creek Redwood State Park. You could definitely explore both areas in a day depending on where you are lodging and what hiking you are planning to do.

What should I wear when visiting Trees of Mystery?

Due to their location close to the ocean, as well as the dense trees, I recommend wearing layers. We visited at the beginning of August and my kids were comfortable in pants and a light sweatshirt. For shoes, we all had tennis shoes which protected our feet from getting dirty.

I want to ride SkyTrail, but can’t walk that far. What should I do?

There is a shuttle that will take you up to the SkyTrail and back down to the waiting area after you are done riding it.

Can I climb on the Paul Bunyan and Babe statues?

Yes, however, the only parts you’ll be able to climb on are Paul’s boots. Just beware that Paul might start talking to you! He often waves his big hand and greets people as they walk across the parking lot, commenting on their clothes, asking questions or telling jokes. It was a fun and unexpected part of our visit!

Our Experience at Trees of Mystery

When planning our trip through the redwoods and up the Oregon Coast, the Trees of Mystery attraction was recommended by many people. We felt that stopping along the way would be a good opportunity for everyone to stretch their legs and explore more of the area. I really appreciated that everything is included in the admission price so we knew what we were paying upfront.

All of our kids loved walking/running down the different paths, looking up at the tall redwood trees, checking out the odd sculptures and carvings, as well as the SkyTrail. Our younger two were definitely tired by the end of our visit, while the older two could have lasted longer. The gift shop and museum were really interesting and I wish we’d had more time to explore them.

Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend the Trees of Mystery in Klamath, CA, to anyone visiting the redwoods or on their way up or down the Oregon Coast. It’s a great attraction and very family friendly. If we decide to do another trip to the area, we would definitely consider visiting again because my kids are all older now so the experience would be different.
