Review of Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament in Scottsdale, AZ

Located just south of Central Scottsdale, I’m sharing my review of the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. It is a unique and immersive experience for the whole family!

My husband and I visited Scottsdale, AZ for a short weekend anniversary trip. Some of our trip was planned out ahead of time, such as going to the OdySea Aquarium and an e-bike tour. Other parts of our trip were spontaneous, such as the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament.

In my research for our trip, I wasn’t aware that they had a location in Scottsdale but happened to see it on our phone’s map. We didn’t have any plans one of the nights we were there, so we booked tickets and arrived at our appointed time.

Having never been before, but knowing of others who had, we had a basic idea of what to expect. Our overall experience of Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament was really good and I think it’s worth the money. The location was very central to a variety of activities, including the Arizona Boardwalk.

I’ll break down the rest of this post into an FAQ style to help answer some questions that I would ask if I were researching and looking for a review of Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament.

Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament FAQs

Is the show good for kids and families?

The short answer is yes. We saw a lot of kids and their families there. That being said, it’s important to know the following:

• It is loud. There are a lot of people, not to mention the horses, music and special effects. If you have kids that are sensitive to noise, you may want to choose a different activity. Another option would be to bring noise canceling headphones or earplugs to dampen the noise.
• Alcohol is served. Before and during the show, alcohol can be purchased. We didn’t see anyone get out of hand, but since you can’t choose your seats, you might end up near people who are drinking. This could affect you and your family’s experience depending on the behavior of those people.

How early should we show up?

Although you can buy your tickets ahead of time, the main reason to show up early is that the seating is first-come, first-served. It is also dependent on how many people are in your group and what type of tickets you purchased. When you buy your tickets, you will receive an email that has your arrival time listed.

What is there to do before the show?

While you can (and should) arrive early, there isn’t too much to do if you don’t want to spend extra money. There are photo opportunities, some games, a gift shop and a few actors. Something unique they had when we went was a falconer with a live bird. We weren’t allowed to touch it, but we could get a picture with them free of charge.

How is the food? Can I see the menu online?

My husband and I agreed that for food that is being prepared in mass, it was pretty good. We had garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, roasted chicken, buttered corn and herb potatoes.

For dessert, we got ice cream. They also offer coffee and two refills of a non-alcoholic drink (such as soda). There isn’t a menu because everyone is served the same food. If you have allergy concerns, see the next question.

I’m concerned about food allergies or have a specialty diet. Do they offer substitutes?

Yes. They have a vegetarian/vegan meal as well as a gluten-free meal. You can read more about the specific substitutes for each by clicking HERE.

How long is the show?

The show is about 2 hours long.

What can I expect from the show?

The two hours absolutely flew by! From start to finish, Medieval Times immerses the audience in a story of knights competing to become the Defender of the Throne. There is mystery, betrayal and of course, lots of jousting and cheering as you follow the story to find out who will come out the winner.

Get ready to be absolutely amazed at the beautiful Andalusian horses and their technique in the arena. Each one is well taken care of from birth through retirement. (Read more HERE.)

How much are tickets? Is there a discount?

As with many ticket prices, they don’t stay the same. Additionally, you can purchase upgrades for each ticket that will increase the cost. That being said, the current prices (as of 10/19/24) for general admission tickets are as follows:

• Adult (11+): $67.95
• Child (3-10): $40.95
• Under 3: Free (must sit on adult’s lap and eat from their plate, otherwise you have to purchase a child ticket)

What comes with each ticket?

Pre-show entertainment, a 4-course feast and an amazing show. Gratuity is not included and you are expected to tip your servers at the end of the performance.

I don’t want to buy a ticket package or other extras. How can I still make sure to have a fun experience?

The best way to ensure a good night at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament is to really get into the experience. Cheer for your knight. Boo at the other knights. Wear the paper crowns. Eat your feast with your hands. Let yourself have fun and don’t worry about what those around are doing or thinking.
