If there’s one thing that will keep my kids busy for a long time, it’s playdough. They can spend an hour or more making all sorts of things. While I usually buy playdough for my kids from the store, I thought it would be fun to make a giant batch of homemade playdough with them, complete with glitter.
To make your own homemade playdough, you’ll need the following:
- 1 c. flour
- 1 c. water
- 1/4 c. salt
- 2 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1 Tbsp. oil
- food coloring (I used about 30 drops to get a darker color)
- glitter
- essential oil (optional)

Combine all the ingredients, minus the glitter, into a pan. Mix it all together then turn the stove onto medium heat. Use a silicone spatula or wooden spoon to stir the mixture.

After a couple of minutes, you’ll see the dough start coming together. When it forms a ball, take it off the stove immediately. Dump it onto your counter or some wax paper and let it cool.

Add the glitter by pouring it into the middle of the dough and kneading it like you would bread. (I haven’t tried adding the glitter to the mixture before cooking it, but if you try it, you’ll have to let me know how it works for you!) You can also add any essential oils at this point.

My kids loved kneading the glitter in, rolling out the dough and using all our cookie cutters. I remember making playdough as a kid and loving it! I think it’s a great way to let kids’ imagination go to work.

This playdough would be a fun activity if you wanted to incorporate teaching about stars and singing the song “Twinkle, Twinkle”. It also makes a great gift for birthdays, Christmas or just because!
