My son has always been interested in how things work. He loves fact books, math and can spend hours building. So when I asked him what kind of theme he’d like his room, I got a response like this: “Um, science and space and engineering and LEGOs”. We narrowed that all down to science and engineering and started brainstorming.

To help us decide what to have in the room, we first thought about how he wanted to use his space. First, he wanted to be able to display his LEGO creations. Second, he wanted a place to sit down and write, draw, create and build. Third, he needed his things organized in a way that was easy to access and put away when he was done.

Below you’ll see that I’ve broken down each of the elements of his room that helped us create a science and engineering inspired boys bedroom.

LEGO Display Shelves

While my son loves building with LEGOs, he wasn’t interested in everything in his room being LEGO themed. He does have a few builds that he likes having on display so we decided to put in some LEGO display shelving. After looking around at what was available, I decided to DIY the shelves myself. They turned out perfect and were a fraction of the cost of ready made LEGO display shelves. You can get the full tutorial HERE if you’re interested in making your own.

Wall Decal

Removable vinyl wall decals are a great way to add more character and style to a room without spending a lot of money. We found this science themed vinyl wall decal on Amazon that combines a lot of the different elements of science that my son is interested in. It was a little time consuming to put it up but it really added that extra science element he wanted.

Pegboard and Desk

We already had a desk in my son’s room but it often became cluttered and unusable because we didn’t have a good storage system. To help with this, we got a pegboard and a variety of accessories. This did two things: 1) it made use of the vertical (wall) space in the room, and 2) it made seeing what was there and where things go super easy. Now, nothing is stored on the desk itself except his lava lamp and he can use it for anything he wants.

Wall Art

There is a lot of wall space in my son’s room so to fill some of the emptiness, we bought some Tesla patent prints and framed them. He loves looking at them and because they are neutral, they don’t feel busy.

Neon Atom Light and Lava Lamp

Having these two lights in his room are a way to give off light without his ceiling light being on. He can turn on the atom light from his bed and the lava lamp is close by on his desk. He often uses these lights at night before bed when he’s reading or relaxing.

Night Sky Projector

A totally unnecessary, but very fun element we added to his room is a night sky projector. I stumbled on it when I was looking at options on Amazon and he loved the idea. The one we have comes with interchangeable disks of galaxies, nebulas and the moon. It rotates slowly and is really calming.

Bedding and Curtains

To bring in the space aspect, my son chose a galaxy print sheets and comforter set. The set came with a pillowcase and we added a solid colored accent pillow that matches his curtains. His favorite part of the bed is the small accent pillow cover that has the periodic table of elements on it.

Storage

Besides the pegboard, here are the other storage and organization solutions we used:

• Over the Closet Door Hanging Organization – I love that this storage solution has actual bins and not just pockets. You can see what is in each bin through the bottom half of the bin which is clear. My son keeps the things he wants to easily access, like puzzles, Nerf gun, etc here.
• Under the Bed Storage – We have two flat under the bed storage bins that fit perfectly. His comforter is long enough that it hangs over the side of his bed and you can’t see them.
• Book Bin – Next to my son’s bed is a fabric bin with the different books he is currently reading. Some always stay there, like his National Geographic Facts book, and others rotate. The rule is that he can only keep as many book in the bin as can reasonably fit and it’s worked well.
