I remember the first year my sisters and I received a bag of reindeer dust. Our mom read us the attached poem and we couldn’t wait for Christmas Eve. We were sure that Santa would come to our house more quickly than other years and eagerly sprinkled the dust all over our front yard.
Now that I have kids of my own, I love watching their excitement over the little things that make Christmas special. Reindeer dust is one of those things and now I’m sharing it with you! It is one of the easiest activities to do with kids and there’s no way to mess it up. (Although I can’t guarantee you won’t end up with some glitter in unexpected places. *wink*)

How to Make Reindeer Dust
First, set up the assembly station. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to pour what you can into separate bowls and use plastic spoons for scooping and stirring.

Give each child their own bowl and spoon and explain that you are making magic reindeer dust to use on Christmas Eve to attract the reindeer (and Santa) to your house more quickly.
Let each child scoop some oatmeal/bird seed into their bowl to start with. Then let them go from there as far as what colors of glitter they want to use, how much, etc.
*NOTE* Depending on your child’s age, they may need a little more help/supervision. My 4 year old did great on her own but my 2 year old definitely needed help.

Once they have everything added, encourage them to stir it all together.
Then pour the reindeer dust into a resealable bag. Feel free to label it with their name so they can use their specific reindeer dust on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Eve, read the reindeer dust poem. Then let them sprinkle their dust in the front yard!

You can also make more reindeer dust to share with family and friends! How cute would this be to drop of by itself or include with a plateful of goodies, like my white chocolate pretzel popcorn mix? Just print off a few extra copies of the poem to take with each bag of dust.
