I love giving neighbor gifts during Christmastime and this peppermint hot cocoa mix in a jar is so quick and easy! You could even create an assembly line with your family and put them together. (Although depending on your kids ages, you may want to do it yourself.) You’ll find the full tutorial for creating this simple (and yummy) gift in a jar below.
How to Make Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix
First, gather your jars. You will need to use PINT jars. Make sure they are clean and dry so that you don’t have ingredients sticking on the inside of the jar and messing up your pretty layers.
Next, gather your ingredients. You will need the following:
- mini marshmallows
- mini chocolate chips
- crushed candy canes
- cocoa powder
- sugar
*PRO TIP* Crush the candy canes in a plastic bag with a rolling pin. I have also see pre-crushed candy canes which would make assembly even easier.
Now it’s time to assemble the hot cocoa mix. Starting at the bottom, layer the ingredients in this order:
Layer 1: 1/3 cup sugar
Layer 2: 1/3 cup cocoa powder
Layer 3: 3 candy canes, finely crushed
Layer 4: 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips
Layer 5: 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
*PRO TIP* To prevent spills and ensure even layers, use a wide mouth funnel. If you don’t have one, you can make one out of paper by rolling it and taping it in place.
Once you’ve finished adding the marshmallows, seal the jar.

Last, print off the tag with instructions on how to make the peppermint hot cocoa and attach it to the jar. (see below)
How to get the {FREE} Peppermint Hot Cocoa Tag
You can download the FREE Peppermint Hot Cocoa Tags by entering your name and email below. You will then receive the file in a separate email which you can then download onto your computer.
Ideas for Decorating the Jar
To make the jar extra festive, you can cut out pieces of holiday paper and place it on top of the lid but before the ring. This will cover the metal. You can just trace the lid to get the correct size.
For the tag, punch a hole in the corner and attach it to the jar with a piece of baker’s twine, raffia or ribbon.
