During my senior year of college, I went to a friend’s house to celebrate New Years Eve. As midnight grew closer, my friend’s parents brought out some pots and pans and wooden spoons. I had no idea what was going on but watched with interest. A few people took them and when the clock struck midnight, a bunch of people ran out the back door, banging their pots and pans and yelling “Happy New Year!”
Turns out that banging pots and pans at the start of the new year is an old tradition that originated in Ireland. The action of making noise by banging pots and pans is said “to ward off evil spirits and negativity, paving the way for a happy and positive year ahead.” (source)
While I haven’t carried this particular tradition with me, I remember how crazy (and loud) it was that night. So this month’s cheer for the new year SVG file is a fun way to remember this tradition. It’s up to you whether or not you decide to actually bang pots and pans at midnight. Also, please note that I will not be responsible for unhappy neighbors or damaged pots. *wink*
